Gag Gifts, Yes or No?

any times there comes a gift-giving occasion that just stumps you. You’ve run out of ideas as to what to give a close friend or family member. There have been many gifts over the years for their birthdays or special holiday occasions and you know they probably have everything they need (this especially occurs with the senior set).
Now, I don’t advocate this for most occasions but consider giving a "gag gift". Gag gift you say — what is it? Some people have not even heard of the term.
Here is the definition, and it’s not what you may think. No, it’s not a rag placed over someone’s mouth but it’s slang terminology for a practical joke. By giving a gag gift you are also giving some humor, and laughter is such a great gift (whether wanted or not)!
In many cases gag gifts are given at Secret Santa parties (see story), baby showers, and office or retirement parties just to see the laughter when the gift is opened. Some people say that these gifts are better given to friends and people you know really well. However, if gifts are to be brought to a bachelor or bachelorette party, then a naughty gag gift is just the ticket.
What you may think is funny can be perceived as just the opposite. It get's you off the hook but it's probably the worst idea giving a gag gift to someone you know nothing about. You have to know their sense of humor and be sensitive to cultural norms. Avoid any religious-oriented items as that would be in bad taste and could really offend the receiver. Try to find a gift that exposes their better qualities and then pokes fun.
Gag gifts usually tend to be cheap or cheap-looking and should probably be included as a second item along with a more prominent (and hopefully classier) gift. Be careful when gifting gag gifts in a romantic setting. Giving your girlfriend a bust enhancer may get you into the doghouse (especially if other people are also present). I once did this (it wasn't even intended as a gag gift) and had to pretend it was a joke when I saw her expression.
There are many occasions that this type of gift is strictly verboden. Anniversaries, weddings, bar mitzvahs, christenings, funerals, get well occasions, are probably the times that crazy humor is not in good taste.
Gag gifts vary across all genders and generations, and range from the very crude to the simply idiotic. They all try to elicit a laugh.
You may think it's easy to find an item of this kind but think again — you’ll see countless of crazy gift ideas and you will need to choose only one or two that fit the occasion (and the person).
