A Divorce Party?

es, this may sound a bit unusual but there is a trend these days to have a divorce party — just the opposite of an engagement party! Most people know of someone who is divorced (or going through a divorce) and if you're close to them, you want to make them happy (at least for a short while).

Being divorced is not like it was before when people branded both people as failures, so what is more special than giving a party with the guest of honor being the divorced person? These days having a divorce party is acceptable among most circles of friends.

That being said, you should check out the sensitivity of the divorced person to such an idea. Some will say, "Yeah, I'm glad to be rid of ____________, let's have some fun!" Others may be bitter, angry and probably not much fun at a party. Your friend may think it’s time to fly again or, on the other hand, want to hide under a rock…so be aware.

Know who to invite

You probably don't want it to be a surprise. Divorces can often be messy and people take different sides, so inviting the wrong people could be a grave faux pas. Will it be a large party or a gathering of close friends? These are the questions that need to be answered. Make sure you get a list of people to invite — don’t assume.

At these parties most will bring gifts, so inform guests as to the sensitivity of the guest of honor so they don’t bring an overly humorous or inappropriate gift if the person is still grieving. What are their needs? Did they keep most of their belongings or were they only left with a suitcase of clothes? This party should improve their morale and make them forget troubles (at least for the duration of the party). The focus should be on their future and moving on to bigger and better things.

Let the divorced speak their mind if they want to make a speech — this is their night to get things off their chest about that failed relationship. Most important, never let guests say it might have been their fault — be supportive. (This all depends of course, who is divorcing…if it's your parents it may be impossible for you to remain neutral.)

There are gifts out there that reflect the sentiment of divorce (it’s true). Here are some ideas to mull over.
